Maria Baptista was born in Brava, Cabo Verde on September 4, 1921, to the late Isabel Gomes. She was a matriarch who lived and left this world on her terms on November 11, 2021, at the age of 100 surrounded by her loving family. She was a strong and courageous woman.
She had four children: Cidalia Baptista Tavares, Jose Baptista (deceased), John Baptista, and Francisco Baptista (deceased). Maria had 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
Maria (Nha Bai) migrated to the United States in 1975, and settled in Pawtucket, RI with her devoted brother, Francisco Gomes (deceased). She worked as a machine operator at an elastic manufacturer. Maria retired at age 65. She was a storyteller and comedian, a collector of many things. She was lovingly known as “The Boss,” a force to be reckoned with by her family. Nha Bai will be missed by many friends and relatives. We take solace in knowing she is resting in eternal peace until we meet again face-to-face.
Visitation will be held for Monday, November 15, 2021, from 4 PM - 7 PM in the Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Higginson Avenue, Lincoln. Her funeral will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, in the St. Anthony’s Church, 32 Lawn Ave, Pawtucket. Burial will be Mount St. Mary’s Cemetery, Pawtucket.
The family respectfully ask that visitors wear masks. To keep everyone healthy and safe, the family will not be hosting a repass following burial.
